Pine tree aroma to smell, lulling cicadas to hear, mountains in view, sun shining down on your neck and turquois blue sea in front of you: Majorca is the most versatile Mediterranean island for all seasons. In Winter, when firstly the overwhelming aroma of orange blossom charms the island and then the almond blossom covers the wide areas in a sea of blossoms; in Spring, when the islands` fields gloom in a lush green and the fauna slowly awakes; in Summer, then sun, beach and sea the main focus is; or in Autumn, when the age old palm tree tops are moved back and forth by the wind – Majorca is always a very special Island. The islands´ cultural heritage offers many options, from sightseeing at Arxiduces and Talaiots to hiking within natural reserves, like the Serra de Tramuntana.
With 3640 km² Majorca is the largest of the 5 Balearic Islands. Today Majorca inhabits about 1 million people. The Balearic Islands have a political autonomous status, and therefore their own island parliament. Its main income is through tourism, but also Majorcan products enjoy growing interest in the world. There is no considerable industry on the island, agriculture and craftsmanship are other very important economic branches.
There are 2 main languages on Majorca: the “Castellanó“, the Spanish language which has become the official language again, and the “Català“ or “Mallorquí“, a Catalonian dialect.
Majorcas` cuisine is not identical with the Spanish one, it is a mixture of various culinary directions. To cook Majorcan is to use fresh ingredients and to take special care of its preparation, nevertheless it is rather hearty and simple. But, as some superior chefs on the island prove, it can be very fine and noble dining. Additionally there are the wonderful wines of the island, which enjoy great reputation in the world.
Rough and wild is the North of the island, and excitingly beautiful; the West amazes with the Tramuntana mountains and the magnificent cliffs; the East is rather stepped and with barren hilly landscape, worth seeing caves and wonderful small bays, the calas; the Center contains the Pla, the lowlands, where the sleepy towns of Majorca are, which is also very agricultural due to its fertile soils; the South contains beaches of Caribbean beauty, the land is flat and mainly dry. And then there is Palma de Mallorca: the island capital and definitely one of the most beautiful cities in the Mediterranean, with its magnificent boulevards, museums, narrow historic town roads, ports and gorgeous Palaces.
